Sunday Family Day

When I was in high school, my mom had this irritating tradition of calling Sunday, Family Day.  I could not go to my friend’s house, they could not come to mine.  I had to stay home and be with my family.  Ugh….the nerve of my family to want to spend time with me.  I was in multiple sports and activities in high school and had practice or games all of the time.  I never really ate supper with my family because I would get home too late for the rest of them.  On Sunday, my mom would make something kind of nice for supper, some kind of great comfort food and we would eat as a family.  Then she would expect us to talk!!  She would even have the nerve to make dessert.  I mean really…..  Sometimes, while supper was cooking we would play a game or watch a movie.  The point of the whole day was she wanted me to be at home……  Again the nerve………

As my kids have gotten older and I have gotten older, I find myself more and more being like my mom.  Truly scary words for any daughter to admit.  But my three girls are constantly running to activities, school, and church.  We eat most nights together, but it can be rushed.  Practice starts at 6 for somebody.  There is homework to be done, showers to take, books to read and the time we spend together during the week is not necessarily quality time.  So Sunday it is…..

During our Sunday Family time, we tend to, just like mom did, make something nicer or more comforting for supper.  Sometimes we play a game, sometimes we watch a movie, the point is we are all spending time together at home.  Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?  I hate it when she turns out to be right………..

However, my family and these days being lazy recharge my body and soul.  Now that we go to church on Wednesdays, we have all of Sunday to be this way.  While Wednesday night and Thursday morning are a bit of a challenge, especially for the five-year-old; I think I am pretty happy with our decision.  Drinking coffee on Sunday morning and staying in my sweatpants all day is just what I need before a long week back at school.

We have recently had a couple of these Sundays.  I got up before anybody else did and I love this time.  I can drink my coffee, do some writing, grade some papers, watch some cooking show on the Food Network.  I can have a few minutes of ME time; something I learned I need to be the best version of myself.  One Sunday not so long ago, we didn’t really make breakfast or lunch but we made Cheesy, Chicken Wild Rice Soup for supper.  It is one of the most comforting soups ever.  I will put the recipe below.  Jason made homemade bread.  Yes, I can throw stuff in a crockpot but he bakes bread from scratch.  Am I a lucky girl or what?

In this chaotic world, families need one day to be together.  Does it have to be Sunday?  No…..We have had family game nights after having pizza on Fridays.  Depending on our schedules, sometimes a family dinner in the middle of the week is as good as it gets.  But you can just tell when we need to get back in sync with each other.  Who knew my mom was on to something???

Challenge Time!!  What do you do on your family days?  Do you like to stay home or do you like to hit the town?  Do you have a go-to comfort food for supper?  Share your comments below or on the Facebook page, Speaking Jelinese.  I love when you like, share or comment because it makes me feel as if I am not alone in this chaotic world.

Talk to you soon,

Angie

  1. I enjoyed your writing and love how you added the recipe at the end. My family can’t have a family day because it would only be me and my mother who shows up.

    1. I think that is absolutely a family day. Who better to support you and spend time with you than your mom 🙂

  2. We never had family days as a child. But I have them with mine and will continue until they get older. Even after they move out I will probably throw something once a month where we all spend time together (I’m sure cooking will bring them back home lol) it’s crazy to know that some people don’t see this as important.

  3. This is great. It’s easy to get lost in the chaos that is life. Before you know it, the kids are grown and gone.

  4. We try to keep Sundays as family day but it doesn’t always work out that way. We do, however, have steak Sundays. Every Sunday evening my husband grills steaks and we have a nice meal together. My husband is also a teacher so he takes a break from grading papers to grill for us :). Love the soup recipe! Thanks for sharing!

  5. The Sabbath day should be all about family and being together. Something so many families in todays world don’t take the time to do.

  6. As you get older and move away from home, you truly appreciate those Sunday Family Days. I designate my Sundays solely to spending time with my family. Since I and my siblings were little we would go to church and then dinner afterwards. We have kept that tradition as we got older. Fortunately, the entire family still lives in the same city, so it’s quite convenient for all eight of us to gather together. We either do a little light shopping, or some outdoor activities with the kiddos, or even lounge around in pajamas all day watching movies. On those days, our parents cook, so that’s something I greatly look forward to every week.

This is a great reminder to slow down on the weekends. Our kiddos love to have pajama days on the weekend, where we don’t leave the house and just play games and relax. On Sundays, I also make a more involved meal and the kids love getting in the kitchen with me.

Love the idea of family day! I did a book study on Finding Sabbath. It is so true that we absolutely need a day of rest. It’s hard to do sometimes with kids activities but so important.

  11. We keep a glass vase and post it notes on our kitchen table. During the month we can write down good things that happen on post it notes and put them in the vase. Then once a month we have a “Good things dinner” where I make an extra special dinner and the kids help cook, then we sit and read all the good things notes as we eat. After dinner we do a special activity together or board game night. Last night it was pumpkin painting!

  16. What a lovely post!! Actually, I find it interesting to name Sundays Family day! That would have been lots of fun if my parents had done it with us. However, my parents used to work Sundays so it was impossible for us to have a family day on Sunday! I had to laugh when you said that you are becoming more like your mother 😅 I think for every child saying something like that is a scary thing😂. Great post loved it!!
